This railway has a turbulent history, marked by difficulties and challenges. Considered one of the most spectacular railway lines in Europe, it links through the Alps two Italian regions — Piedmont and Liguria — as well as the Côte d'Azur, passing through the Roya valley and the Col de Tende. The construction challenges posed by the mountainous and wild terrain were overcome through remarkable engineering feats: imposing bridges and viaducts, long tunnels and helical loops that cross the Alps to reach the Mediterranean. Contrary to popular belief, mountains do not separate peoples — they have always been places of passage and encounter. Here, the railway becomes a true symbol of the relationship between the territories and cultures of the Southern Alps.
